Heroic Leadership

at every level in the organization

Training:

The Hero in the Next Cubicle

It is easy to identify heroes like Hercules and Thor in mythology and movies, but what do heroic qualities look like in real life today? What would they look like in a corporation or political parties?

What universal qualities do heroes share? I would argue they are the same set of behaviors and qualities that the best leaders, the rare and truly courageous kind, share. I have researched heroic leadership qualities and distilled a core set of these behaviors and qualities into eight categories which roughly align to the stages of the Hero’s Journey.

Workplace unhappiness is an epidemic:

  • 70% of workers are very unhappy or disengaged; 30% are actively looking for new work at any time

  • The cost to organizations is $450-$550 billion per year; unhappy workers are 25% less productive

  • Up to 57% of workers leave their jobs because of their managers

What's the solution?

  • A new kind of leadership, calling for heroic leadership at every level

  • Lead from any seat

  • Focus on raising the level of consciousness for managers and employees

The qualities and behaviors of highly effective leaders, which I call heroic leaders, are:

  1. Rise above challenges

    • Resilient and confident

    • Proactive

    • Face inner and outer challenges

    • Strengths and flaws

  2. A strong moral compass

    • Strong sense of self-worth

    • Honest and trustworthy, high integrity

    • Guided by strong values

  3. Purpose and conviction

    • Strong vision and passion for achieving goals

    • Disciplined

    • Driven by inner guidance to do the right thing

  4. Know the power of words and actions

    • High Emotional Intelligence (EQ), empathy and compassion

    • Move out of negativity quickly

    • Know thoughts materialize as things

  5. Courage to change the status quo

    • Take risks and break out of old patterns

    • Not triggered into habitual emotional responses

    • Creative problem-solvers

  6. Stay aligned with their true selves

    • They lead by example

    • Align work and interactions with values

    • Transparency

    • Humility

  7. Create positive environments

    • They take ownership and are accountable

    • Empowered and empower others

    • Can visualize end goals and materialize them

  8. Work for the highest good of all

    • Are of service to others rather than service to self

    • Sense of purpose greater than themselves

    • Eager to share gifts and talents, and mentor others
